On the road to resurrection, the next two cries from the cross are “I thirst” and “It is finished.” Even in His suffering, Jesus is revealing His heart for us.

SERMON TEXT

John 19:28-30 (ESV)

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

SERMON NOTES

  • Jesus fully enters our humanity
  • Jesus’ thirst fulfills God’s redemptive plan
  • Only Jesus can satisfy our deepest thirst

Question: What are we turning to when our souls feel dry?

  • It is finished means the debt is fully paid
  • Living from the finished work… not for God’s approval
  • The finished work frees us from guilt, shame, and striving

The invitation at the cross is to stop chasing what cannot satisfy, and come to the one who can.

”It is finished” is not the end of the story – it is the foundation for a whole new way of living!
