“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
Jesus’ first word from the cross tells us something essential: forgiveness is not the reward at the end of the gospel… it is the doorway into it.

Luke 23:33-34 (ESV)
And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

That should be deeply comforting to us, because the road we’re walking together leads to life.
